Deep inside the earth, in the darkest, fiery places, precious metals are exposed to forces strong enough to crush them into crystals. This is how Sapphires are made...
The original Sapphire Dance Troupe came from Andromeda's Egyptian dance class in Holyhead, which started dancing together in 2007. While the lineup changed in early years, a definitive group eventually emerged - Jan, Kath, Andromeda, Kelly and Emma.
The name came from an aspiration "to be like Rachel Brice's troupe, Indigo, but, like, more sparkly!" Andromeda struck very lucky in her fellow troupe dancers - these were ladies willing to take on a challenge. From psychedelic flamenco fusion to cyber folk, purist Egyptian to Gothic drama, and the time they brought the Doctor Who theme music to life, Sapphire were always happy to try something new, to push boundaries and to redefine themselves and the dance form.
Sapphire last performed as the principle lineup in 2014, and has since, through the general changes of life, disbanded. Original members Kath and Jan continue to dance with Emerald, and Kath has herself become a qualified teacher of Black Sheep Tribal Style, a group improvisational format, which she teaches in Holyhead and Bangor. Several past members of Sapphire dance with her troupe Lapis.
Kath and Andromeda formed Hieroglitch, a duet, in 2015, as an opportunity for them to continue to work together on fusion challenges in the best tradition of Sapphire Dance Troupe.
